Solid Ether

(Simplify.)

About the Site

I’m Dan Jewett. This little project, Solid Ether, is my space on the web. It breaks one rule right off the bat by mixing business with pleasure. You’ll have to understand that for me they are one and the same.

This is a second go-round for Solid Ether. You will notice a large gap in the posting dates from 2011 until around January 2017. Possibly explained by all the time working at Apple, Inc. but more likely by a six year bout of pronounced bewilderment.1

A colophon of sorts:

I built Solid Ether with the Django Web framework which is written in the Python programming language.

Post processing uses the python version of Markdown originally written in Perl by John Gruber. All of the content is written in Markdown and prettified with SmartyPants. Code snippet syntax highlighting is courtesy of Pygments and I used the mistune markdown parser to make it all work together.

The type is ‘currently’ set in Maitree for most body text and the sans-serif font is Lato. Both are free fonts made available by Google Fonts.

In the body text for articles, I’m trying out mixing in san-serif for the bold and italic text. Typography is something I love and am always changing my mind about.

Oh yes, the logo. It’s a model of a dimethyl ether (the simplest) molecule.

Ether:
1. a: the rarefied element formerly believed to fill the upper regions of space
b: the upper regions of space: heavens

2. a: less commonly aether: a medium that in the wave theory of light permeates all space and transmits transverse waves
b: airwaves

3. a: a light volatile flammable liquid used chiefly as a solvent and especially formerly as an anesthetic
b: any of a class of organic compounds characterized by an oxygen atom attached to two carbon atoms

Hosting

Solid Ether is hosted by the most excellent folks at Web Faction. I can’t say enough good things about this provider. Excellent support and sophisticated services for prices better than the mega-hosts. Check them out if you are looking for top shelf hosting.

And related to hosting, I use gandi.net as the registrar for all my domains. Their slogan is no bullshitâ„¢ and I think they stick to that pretty well. Check them out for affordable domain registration.

I hope you enjoy visiting my site and I’d enjoy hearing your thoughts about it. Feel free to reach out anytime.
